Both Adam and Kate are extremely proud to work at Royal Cornwall Hospital and want to give something back for the care loved ones have received. Adam Wheeldon, Deputy Director of Finance, and Kate Plunkett-Reed, Deputy Directorate Manager, Surgical Services, have challenged themselves to each cycle for 24 hours on their road bikes set up on turbo trainers for Charity. Both Adam and Kate are extremely proud to work at Royal Cornwall Hospital and want to give something back for the care loved ones have received.
At 8am on March 2nd the pair will start their 24 hours of cycling. They hope to complete just over 1000Km which is the equivalent of cycling the Cornish Coast Line. Kate and Adam will also be entering the virtual world of Zwift, allowing you to join them in the comfort of your own home in your avatar form!
Unfortunately, both Adam’s parents have died of Cancer and have been the main driving force behind this fundraising event. Adam said “I saw first-hand the wonderful care given to patients. My parents were very well looked after and the staff in the Headland Unit, Lowan Ward and Sunrise Centre were amazing. This is my way of saying thank you to them and all the staff across the Trust who give such brilliant care to patients and families.”
Kate added, “I love working for Royal Cornwall Hospital and being able to see different teams work together to provide the best patient care. Cycling 1000Km is going to tough but we’re up for the challenge! We will only have short comfort breaks but all other times we will be sat on the bikes striving to reach our target. It is great that we will see directly how the money we raise makes an impact on staff and patients within the Cancer and Surgical Services.”
There are multiple ways you can get involved and support Kate and Adam, donate money and help raise the profile of Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity. There will be a third bike available for you to challenge yourself, we are asking you to see how far you can cycle in 5 minutes. This is a ‘donate to play’ challenge and the winner will be announced on the 3rd of March.
Can’t cycle but want to support? You could volunteer to hold a collection tin for half an hour or donate a prize for the Tombola. Please contact Maxine.Moustrides@NHS.net if you can help.
Most of all please support this brilliant pair by donating to their Just Giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/NHS1000kmcycle
