Appointment of Chief Executive

Following recent interviews, Steve Williamson has been appointed to the substantive role of Chief Executive for the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust.

RCHT Chairwoman, Dr Mairi Mclean said, “We’re delighted to be announcing Steve Williamson’s appointment and look forward to welcoming him in the New Year. He brings valuable senior leadership and operational management experience from both here in the UK and overseas, which I have no doubt will complement the strengths of the existing team at RCHT.”

Steve is an experienced NHS and Health Service Chief Executive. He is currently working in Australia where he is Chief Executive of Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service, a role he has held since January 2017. He is responsible for the operation of 12 hospitals, public health services, mental health services and other health services across a region of 110,000km2, about the size of England.

Steve was previously Chief Executive and Chief Operating Officer at South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust and has also worked at a senior level at University Hospitals Southampton NHS Foundation Trust where he was responsible for regional specialist cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, major trauma centre and other specialist services. He has also worked as Associate Chief Operating Officer and as General Manager at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust.

Speaking ahead of his move to Cornwall, Steve said: “It is a great privilege to be starting as the Chief Executive for Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust. Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly is a very special place and my family and I are really looking forward to becoming part of the community here.

“I have already had the opportunity to meet a number of great colleagues from RCHT and from key stakeholders in the Councils, Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Integrated Care System leadership team, and other regional stakeholders. Everyone I have spoken to has been passionate about delivering great health and care and I look forward to working with you all.”

Mairi added, “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Tony Chambers for the great job he is doing to steer our ship as interim Chief Executive. Tony will remain with us until Steve arrives, helping us as we seek to reduce waiting times for elective patients and to prepare for what is likely to be a challenging winter ahead.”

Steve will be joining the Royal Cornwall Hospitals in January 2022.
