A BABA Date for your diary

Organisers of The BABA Appeal are ringing the bell for playtime across the county, asking you to make it a date in your diary.
‘Play Date and nominate’ , the latest campaign raising funds for The Cornwall Birth and Baby Appeal, is an excuse to get together with friends, family and children at home, in the local park, at a playgroup, nursery or school and pledge support for the fundraising appeal set to complete the transformation of the maternity and neonatal services at Royal Cornwall Hospital.

“Play Date is the perfect excuse to get everyone together, to chat, have a cuppa, eat cake, bake cake, play some games or ‘swish’ your unwanted children’s clothes and toys – the possibilities really are endless as long as you are having fun and raising a few pennies!” said Karen Murrish, Fundraising Manager for Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity.

Baker Tom’s have added their support to the campaign adding some child friendly recipes to the fundraising pack,
“I became a Dad for the first time a couple of years ago, and baking at home has taken on a new dimension since then! Hopefully the recipes will help families in planning their play dates, and are nice and easy ones that children can get involved in too. Tasty cakes are a must at any play date! Baker Tom’s is really pleased to be supporting Cornwall’s BABA Appeal, offering families and the amazing maternity team at Royal Cornwall Hospital the modern facilities they deserve.”

The added challenge to playful participants is to snap a shot of the Play Date, post it onto Facebook and nominate other friends to hold their own Play Date.

“We hope that our supporters will enjoy their Play Dates and we’re sure their photos will show we are putting the fun into fundraising! There are lots fundraising ideas in our free pack with tips on how to raise a few pennies for the appeal. Ideas and tips ranging from super simple events to those wanting to make a little more effort. We really hope Cornish families get on board and book a Play Date” said Karen Murrish.

Children’s activity centres are also urged to take up the Play Date challenge. Pirate Pete’s Soft Play Centre at Newquay’s Atlantic Reach has plans to support the appeal, as many of their staff and patrons have a close affinity with the work of the Maternity and Neonatal teams at Royal Cornwall Hospital.

“Atlantic Reach are pleased to support the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity’s Play Date campaign. A cause close to so many of our customers’ hearts; both local and on holiday, not forgetting our staff and members alike. It is great to be able to offer our Leisure facilities to such a worthwhile cause and to see the local community come together to raise money for the Cornwall Birth and Baby Appeal whilst having fun too!”
The Cornwall Birth and Baby Appeal will fund equipment which is in real need in the Maternity and Neonatal departments and allow for refurbishments to provide more homely and relaxed environments. Funds will supplement a programme of development, already underway, which has been made possible through £3.6 million of investment from the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust.

With over 4,500 babies born each year at the hospital, and 10-12% of those babies being cared for by the team at the county’s only Neonatal Unit, the changes will have a real impact on the care they receive.

Developments to the Maternity services have already seen the Postnatal Ward move to a new refurbished space and soon work will begin on the new Birth Centre where the addition of four birthing pools in spacious rooms will give added choice to Cornwall’s parents-to-be.
