RCHT’s paediatric diabetes team support young elite sports people

Three years ago, sport loving Rio Thomas was diagnosed with diabetes. As a talented footballer, Rio was concerned it would really affect his ability to play at the level he wanted to. However, that was not the case. Since his diagnosis, Rio, now aged 14, has played football at county level and this season is playing football, rugby and is a long distance runner for his school Fowey River Academy.

A drug trialled in Cornwall has today been announced as a “breakthrough” in breast cancer treatment

The drug, called ribociclib, has been shown to slow the progression of advanced breast cancer by at least 10 months and can delay the need for chemotherapy, giving women the chance to live a normal life for longer.

Addaction HOT Team has arrived

RCHT now has Addaction outreach workers within its safeguarding team whose role will be to support patients with alcohol or drug addiction. The Addaction Hospital Outreach Team (HOT) consists of two workers: Joanne Sutcliffe and Lee Derrick.

Care Quality Commission reports

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has published its report on Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust following the inspection in July 2017. At the same time the CQC has also published the report of a review it conducted in April on the wider health and social care system in Cornwall.
