CITS Cyber Security Analyst is awarded Cyber Newcomer of the Year at the first ever NHS Digital Cyber Associates Network (CAN) Awards

Cornwall IT Services were shortlisted in three separate categories at the virtual ceremony, which took place earlier this week, and walked away with a win and two highly commended.
Huw Jones, Apprentice Cyber Security Analyst, has been named Cyber Newcomer of the Year at this year’s inaugural Cyber Associates Network Awards 2022. It’s a fantastic result for Cornwall IT Services, who were also highly commended in both the Cyber Team of the Year (Technical Services) and Contributor of the Year (Martin Price) awards, respectively.

“I am incredibly pleased to announce the results,” explains Martin Price, IT Security Manager for Cornwall IT Services. “Huw has become a valued member, not only of the IT Security Team in Cornwall, but of the wider NHS cyber-security community in the south-west.”

Martin continues: “Huw is always looking for new innovations, always keen to further his knowledge, initially undertaking research in his own time to understand specific exploits and vulnerabilities, and later devoting his own time to researching techniques used by cyber-criminals in social networking attacks. From this, he’s worked to develop a solution to assess user awareness of some of these techniques with the intention of improving education and knowledge.”

Huw was keen to support the IT Security Team during the early days of the pandemic, but also showed an unswerving willingness to pitch in and lend a hand wherever it was needed, utilising his previous knowledge and skills to best serve the department. Martin continues: “Huw has a very willing attitude to all aspects of cyber-security and has been a valuable member of the team, demonstrating both his willingness to go above and beyond and undertake research of his own accord for the greater benefit of the team, the department, and the wider NHS Trust.”

Recognising the success of the team, Kelvyn Hipperson, Chief Information Officer and System Digital Lead for Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, adds:

“I would also like to add my congratulations to Huw, Martin and the entire Technical Services team. They’ve all done incredibly well, not only to be shortlisted, but to have all three categories recognised is an amazing result. I’m so proud of everyone and the difficult and often innovative work they’ve been doing to support our hospitals and our services during this unprecedented time.”
