Before returning to Cornwall I was a paediatric consultant at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust for 7 years. From 2006 until 2014 I helped develop opportunities for children and families in the South West to participate in high quality research studies, first as Co-Director of Medicines for Children Research Network South West, and later as the Peninsula Clinical Research Network Childrens’ Research Lead.
I trained in UK paediatrics in Truro, Plymouth, Bristol and Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and in the 1990’s I worked for around 18 months as Lead Paediatric Medical Officer in a large government hospital in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. I subsequently spent 3 years with the UK Medical Research Council in the Gambia, West Africa, studying the impact of prenatal and early postnatal nutritional and environmental influences on immunological development and vaccine responses in rural Gambian infants.
