Gary Matthews

Dr Matthews graduated from Bristol Medical School in 1992 and committed the first phase of his medical career to the Royal Navy. After appointments in the Royal Naval Hospital Stonehouse, Plymouth, he was appointed as Squadron Medical Officer, First Frigate Squadron, which entailed deployments to the Mediterranean, Persian Gulf, the Far East and Australasia.
Return to the United Kingdom marked the beginning of his career in anaesthesia, during which time he has practised a broad range of subspecialty anaesthesia in the South West, London and Canada. As a consultant anaesthetist Dr Matthews has gained NHS and independent sector experience in the South West region, and additionally has had military tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Dr Matthews joined the Royal Cornwall Hospital as a consultant anaesthetist in February 2009. His current clinical interests include pre-hopsital, orthopaedic and regional anaesthesia, bariatric and vascular specialties. He holds various roles within the anaesthesia department; specialty lead, lead clinician for perioperative medicine and a fellowship in vascular and perioperative medicine.

Dr Matthews is a committee member for the Vascular Anaesthesia Society of Great Britain and Ireland (VASGBI). He is also an educational supervisor, and academic tutor and the theme lead for the University of Exeter Medical School (UEMS) Special Study Unit.

Dr Matthews also has a Masters in Business Administration (MBA). He is interested in the Healthcare System and has a role as flying doctor with the Cornwall Air Ambulance. More recently Dr Matthews has attained Masters Level Executive Coach qualifications and offers coaching to those who seek this.
