Jon Stratton

The renal department works as an integrated department. The four consultants take the ward responsibilities for 3 weeks out of 12, whilst maintaining renal clinics and our other commitments.

Between us we are responsible for all nephrology care in Cornwall, except for the first 6 weeks after renal transplantation which usually occurs in Plymouth. We have clinics at Treliske, a weekly clinic at Bodmin and Penzance, fortnightly at St Austell and monthly in Newquay.

Specialist clinics for dialysis modalities, transplant recipients and a joint clinic for complex renal-diabetes conditions are also held. We work with a team of nurses and dieticians to care and support all patients with renal conditions, in the community and at the hospital sites. Nurse and dietetics led clinics are held, usually running parallel with a consultant clinic. We work closely with the interventional x-ray department, urology department and the vascular surgery department to provide care for renal patients.

We believe in supporting medical students who are regularly in attendance in our hospital clinics and the ward. We work closely with GPs to support their care, investigation and treatments of renal conditions. We believe in reducing unnecessary clinic attendances at the hospital by delivering as much renal healthcare in the patient’s locality as is possible.
