He completed a diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine in October 2009 at Bath University and is a Foundation Member of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine (UK).
Mr Matthews continues to serve in the Royal Navy and holds a consultant appointment at the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust. Mr Matthews treats a wide variety of patients for problems of the knee from high intensity athletes and Servicemen to the problems in later life of arthritis of the knee.
He specialises in soft tissue reconstruction of the knee including anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, meniscal disorders and patellofemoral problems. He also performs partial and total knee replacement and continues to perform primary hip replacement surgery.
Mr Matthews is involved in teaching the surgical trainees within the region and has a strong interest in research, presenting at national and international meetings. He continues to publish papers in academic and scientific journals and is the mortality and knee governance lead for the orthopaedic department at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. In addition Mr Matthews is the Trust Clinical Lead for major trauma.
