The new Proud to Care Cornwall campaign, ‘Cornwall Needs You Now’, is part of the health and care system’s response to the pandemic.
Cornwall Council portfolio holder for adults, Cllr Rob Rotchell said: “Cornwall needs to recruit new hard-working social care and health professionals now, more than ever.
“Our social care and health workers are valued key workers within Cornwall and the work that they do to support our most in need residents is invaluable.
”While we value the skills and expertise that experienced social care and health professionals bring to the sector, there are many roles suitable for those with less or no previous experience. We’d particularly welcome applications from those who’ve previously worked in retail, hospitality and leisure-based roles.
“The right values and attributes are the most important things you need; we’re looking for people with integrity, empathy and a caring nature.”
All roles will offer full training and support for those new to the sector, with PPE provided by employers.
Kerry Eldridge, Director of Workforce for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly health and care partnership and Director of People and Organisational Development at Royal Cornwall Hospitals, said: “We know sadly a number of our communities have been impacted by redundancies due to Covid-19 and we have exciting developments right across health and social care in Cornwall to support people to make a role in care their next career choice.
“We have a created a new supportive training programme to provide training to work within any of our care settings across the county, for people who are new to care. We have roles available within residential and nursing homes, GP practices, community and acute hospitals and people’s own homes.
“There’s never been a better time to be going into care roles with amazing opportunities for career development through apprenticeships and professional qualifications, offering the chance to earn while you learn.”
Helen Charlesworth May, Joint Accountable Officer for Public Health and Care for Cornwall Council and NHS Kernow, said: “Our latest Proud to Care campaign will contribute to alleviating pressures across the system.
“We want to raise awareness of social care and health vacancies across Cornwall, help people understand the benefits of working within the sector and encourage people to apply for roles now.
“This new joint recruitment campaign is an excellent example of system partnership working, identifying solutions that will benefit us all.”
Prospective applicants for roles will be able to speak to people currently working in the sector to understand more about what it is like to work in health and care, opportunities available and to find their ideal job match.
James Godolpin, assistant manager of Perran Bay Care Home, said: “Caring is completely different to what people imagine. It’s more than just washing or taking someone to the toilet – that’s the most basic part – it’s also about thinking how you can support people to live a fulfilling and positive life and in turn by thinking of others that helps your own mental health.
“Caring is also very good fun and some of the greatest stories that I have been told have been from the residents that we look after.”
Linda Whitford, manager of Perran Bay Care Home, said: “Both James and I started as carers before we became managers. It is one of those special roles where you learn on the job while earning money. You can progress to all different care fields, some of our own carers have gone on to work for the ambulance service, become occupational therapists, midwives, paediatric nurses.
“Caring is very rewarding and it is one of the most respectful roles you can do. We have the honour of being part of the next chapter of their lives and supporting them to live it to the full until their final days.”
Joy O’Gorman, a student nurse with Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I chose nursing because I was inspired by the district nursing and acute care teams that supported me as a carer while I looked after a family member during their final years. The nursing care and support they gave to my loved one was outstanding. I wanted to give back and apply the gold standard services we received to those I have the privilege of nursing once I qualify.
“I love nursing and all it entails, and despite the increased difficulties my peers and role models have to face daily due to staff shortages, reduced funding, increasing demands and this year the pandemic, their passion for the job shines through.”
