Could you be a Patient Leader?

This page was last updated: February 14th, 2023

January saw the launch of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust’s Patient Leader Programme. This new, voluntary role will see leaders recruited as equal members of their teams to work alongside RCHT staff, volunteers and patients, influencing and shaping our services to meet the needs of the wider community.

“We need people who can stand up and say, ‘How can I make things better for patients?’” explains Jo Dobson, Patient Engagement Manager for the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust. “Ideally, we are looking for people who can demonstrate compassion and empathy, people with good listening skills, excellent judgement and respect for the views of others.”

Jo continues:

“We are committed to putting the voice of our patients, carers and families at the heart of everything we do and working in partnership with people and communities. Whether your experience is as a patient, carer, friend or family member of someone who has used our RCHT services in the last year, we’d love to hear from you.”

“The role is currently open to Cornwall residents only,” Jo adds. “Volunteer Patient Leaders will be recruited to work alongside our staff, as equal members of the team, influencing and shaping our services to meet the needs of our community. Patient Leaders will join meetings, committees, focus groups and ad hoc events to contribute their lived experiences, wisdom and expertise, working together with us to engender meaningful change and improvements.”

“There is no set requirement for the number of hours a Patient Leader commits to on a weekly basis, however, we do ask that volunteers specify the level of hours that they’re able to input and whether this would be a regular and sustained commitment.”

If you would like a Patient Leader to help your team, please do not hesitate to contact the Patient Engagement Team. Telephone: 01872 252793 (Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm) or email

Please do tell your patients about this initiative and ask them to contact the Patient Engagement Team if they wish to apply. Closing date 07 February 2023.
