High tech simulation training supports maternity safety

Our midwives have been using high tech simulation training in the community to ensure safer care for women who require emergency support when giving birth outside of hospital.
The CQC said on a previous inspection that they were concerned about the care that was in place for women who deteriorated during birth in the community. The maternity team has responded by using an evidence-based training package PROMPT (PRactical Obstetric Multi-Professional Training) for obstetric emergencies. This is proven to support better outcomes and improve knowledge, clinical skills and team working.

Alongside this, the maternity team developed a simulation training programme, working together with colleagues in the ambulance service, to learn and improve their response to women who need a higher level of care.

Through the combination of training in hospital and at the point of care, our midwives have gained greater skills and confidence, as well as identified additional equipment they need.
