Lion’s share for Renal Unit patients in Truro

This page was last updated: October 24th, 2022

Patients of the Renal Unit at Royal Cornwall Hospital will benefit from the fundraising of the Lions Club of Roche thanks to their outgoing President Aaron Cirullo and his team.

President from 2020 through to 2022, Mr Cirullo, also a kidney transplant patient, knows only too well how the £3,000 donation will help patients, “I have a long history with the Renal Team at Treliske and before that with Guys Hospital in London. So to me it was a “no brainer”. I have had numerous kidney transplants, all done at Guys Hospital in London. My family and I have since moved to Cornwall and my healthcare was taken over by Mr Parry and his team. I have been under their care ever since,” said Mr Cirullo.

“It is important to me that the funds raised will specifically benefit the Renal Unit at Royal Cornwall Hospital. This is my chance to give something back with thanks for my care. I know that the team will identify exactly what is needed for the unit,”

he added.

Receiving the donation from the Lions Club representatives, Frank Sciuto, Renal Unit Manager, explained how donations to the fund are used, “We can purchase additional equipment or items to improve the environment for our patients. So many of them visit the unit multiple times a week and spend long days with us, they become like family! The addition of a TV or adding some decoration can make the unit feel more homely and relaxing.”

Group of staff from the Renal Unit gather to thank the Lion's club for their donation.“We are currently undergoing some work to create a Home Dialysis training area and this donation from the Lions could help to add the little extras to take the refurbishment to the next level,” Frank added.

Despite fundraising through the challenging time of the pandemic, the club have been able to raise funds through a range of activities such as coffee mornings, bingo nights, race nights and the ‘Lions Tombola Stall’ which member Mel, takes on the road to Cornwall Services along with the Lion’s Mascot.

Mr Cirullo gives thanks to everyone that helped to raise funds for the unit,

“I have a very loyal and generous group of friends that attend all our events and help us to raise the money. This group is known to myself and my family as “the gang” and they all know who they are. We are also very grateful for the support we receive from the local Roche community, one group to mention being the Roche Over 55’s Club.”

This generous donation is thanks to an entire team of Lions, as listed below:
