Media statement

Today, we have established a system-wide Incident Control Command Centre (Gold Command with senior clinicians and executives) to maintain safe health and care services across Cornwall.
Following the severe weather last week the whole health economy has been under extreme pressure with high demand for urgent services and difficulties discharging patients back home or to their community.

It is essential that health and care teams make the best use of resources and capacity to stand down from Operational Pressures Escalation Level 4 – the highest level of alert.

We are asking our local community to only use the Emergency Department in a genuine emergency. We also need relatives and friends to help by collecting and supporting patients when they are ready to leave hospital.

We have a wide range of services that can support people in the community including pharmacies, GPs, Minor Injury Units, the Urgent Care Centre in Penzance which is open 24/7 and you can always call NHS 111 for help and advice.

Last week during the snowy conditions we had a fantastic response from all our staff and the community and we are now looking for a similar response to help us return to normal service levels across the health and social care system.
