New Neonatal Unit virtual tour to help relax and reassure new parents

An online virtual tour that was co-produced with parents, has been launched for the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust (RCHT) Neonatal Unit.
This virtual tour offers a ‘behind closed doors’ view and is aimed at anyone who may need to prepare for their baby to spend time on the unit. This may happen in the weeks leading up to birth if premature delivery is planned, at the point of transfer across our region or on admittance to a local unit directly from labour ward. In all circumstances it is hoped that being able to familiarise themselves with the environment may both empower a parent and begin to reduce the anxiety associated with entering somewhere unfamiliar. The interactive nature of these tours puts parents in control, enabling them to explore areas of the unit and receive information as and when they wish and at a pace that suits them. Typically, just under 10% of babies born in the UK receive treatment in a Neonatal Unit.

Having a virtual tour will give families of those babies in Cornwall, the opportunity to look around to help them understand what to expect in the unit and see the environment in which their infant will be cared. The tour is interactive and allows viewers to find out more about the facilities, the team, and equipment by using the tag points which give information, guidelines and tips.

A parent of a baby who had previously been on the Neonatal commented on the virtual tour and said ‘

I wish there was something like this when we were on the unit – it would have helped relax me, knowing where my baby was’.

Another commented,

‘A personal touch is better – seeing someone on the ‘video’ that you may meet is reassuring. It’s real, not generic’

Helen Greenhill, Neonatal and Transitional Care Matron, said “Being admitted to the neonatal unit can be an overwhelming and daunting time, this virtual tour will help reassure families and provide them with all the information they need before or during their stay on the neonatal unit. There are explanations of the care we provide, the equipment we use, the team and other useful information and videos for families to access at their own pace. It has been co-created with parents who have experienced neonatal care and we really hope it will be a valuable resource for future families. We’d like to thank the South-West Neonatal Network for co-ordinating the creation of the virtual tours.”
