Who we are and what we do

The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust was established in 1992. It comprises three hospitals:

The Trust provides acute hospital services for the majority of Cornwall’s resident population of approximately 500,000. This figure can be doubled by holidaymakers during the busiest times of the year.

Kernow Clinical Commissioning Group is the principal commissioner of services from the Trust.

As an NHS Trust it is led by a board of executive and non-executive directors. Public Board Meetings are held approximately every six weeks.

Our Standing Orders, Standing Financial Instructions and Scheme of Delegation set out the way our Trust is governed.

Meetings with pharmaceutical companies and other medical suppliers

Prior to 2016, this information was not recorded centrally by the RCHT. The Trust is now working with its Divisions to capture this information through the adoption of the Medical Industry Accredited (MIA) scheme. Trust wide adoption of the scheme not only ensures that the Trust meets with its obligations under the FOI Act, but helps to:

  • Raise standards of training for company representatives and service engineers visiting acute and critical care areas of hospitals;
  • Provide assurance to hospital staff that company personnel admitted to sensitive areas are properly training and are fully aware of their responsibilities; and
  • Help the Trust fulfil its duty of care to protect patients and ensure safe surgical and clinical outcomes

Our Procurement Team are working hard with Divisions to roll out the scheme Trust wide and it is hoped that by the end of 2016, we will be able to report all meetings with pharmaceutical companies and other medical suppliers as part of our Publication Scheme.

In the meantime, if the information you are seeking is not already available, you can still make a Freedom of Information request.
