Acute Oncology

This page was last updated: January 5th, 2023

The Acute Oncology service supports cancer patients who are acutely unwell and have been admitted to hospital due to complications of their cancer or their treatment.

Our team works closely with the admitting doctors and the oncology specialist team to provide rapid assessment and support the patient’s physical, emotional and psychological needs. We help coordinate and streamline their care whilst in hospital and work to get the patient home safely as soon as possible.

We care for patients with a number of complications including:

  • Neutropenic sepsis
  • Malignant spinal cord compression
  • Malignant hypercalcaemia
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Immunotherapy
  • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea caused by chemotherapy
  • Oral complications and oral mucositis
