T-Level students from Truro and Penwith College attend their first industry placement at RCHT

On Tuesday 13th December, the Learning and Development Team hosted 10 first year T-Level students from Truro and Penwith College, for their first industry placement.

T-Levels are a brand-new two-year qualification as an alternative to A Levels or vocational programmes. On completion, they receive an industry-recognised qualification that is equivalent to three A Levels. The students spend 80% of their time in the classroom and 20% on a 315-hour placement with an employer to give them the skills and knowledge companies are looking for.

“The students spent the morning learning about the NHS and RCHT,” explains Nikki Pryke, Apprenticeship Lead for Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust. “This gave them an insight into the role of a Health Care Support worker before spending a few hours in the afternoon out on the wards shadowing some of our wonderful HCSWs. They were very excited when they got the opportunity to change into scrubs and even posed in the freezing conditions for a photo.”

One of the college tutors involved on the day said: “A very big thank you to you both and the ward staff for providing our T-Level Health first years with such an informative, educational, relevant and enjoyable day. We all felt so very welcomed by you both and the students were buzzing with enthusiasm and knowledge following the success of the day. We look forward to more work taster/employability skills sessions in the new year. Thank you so very much again on behalf of the whole team.”

The 2nd year T level students have all signed up for the NHS reservists’ scheme and are currently out on our wards completing their industry placement hours as paid care buddies. Working in collaboration with Truro and Penwith College, RCHT is working hard to grow our own talented workforce for the future.
